The Silver Mother
The Silver Mother is my number #1 pick for the elderly and disabled. It’s especially helpful for those who are worried about a loved one whom is elderly or disabled. The Silver Mother is an easy solution to keeping a watchful eye without being there.
The Silver Mother is a life monitoring device that is all encompassing. It works by using the “mother hub” and multiple sensors. These sensors can be used for a vast variety of things from monitoring doors to temperature. It’s an easy to use system that will help ensure safety with your loved one.
Ringly has some amazing products out there including their ring and bracelet activity tracker. Why do I love these so much? Well, for one, it’s a lot easier to convince an elderly woman to wear a pretty ring or bracelet than it is to get them to wear a fit bit.
Second, like most health monitoring devices, you can sync up with an account. This enables you, your loved one, or both of you to check out your statistics whenever you like. It will even send reminders if you haven’t been moving around much.
Michael Kors Smart Watch
This is another activity tracker I can get behind. With it’s fashion trendy design, this is going to be a gift your loved one will swoon over. They will have a beautiful new watch and you will have peace of mind.
It’s a great way to disguise a health monitoring device for an elderly person. It can track data and even lights up with texts and calls. My grandma would love this. She has a hard time hearing her phone and this way she can always tell if she has messages or missed calls!
This one was a pretty simple jump from my other picks. It measures heart rate, has an accelerometer, and gyroscope. Plus, again, it links up with your smart phone so you can access the data.
I like this product for the elderly because of it’s ease of use. As I’ve mentioned before, my grandma loves her iPad and finds Apple very user friendly. This is just another product that has knocked it out of the park.
The Fit Bit Surge Fitness Superwatch
I know, I know, another watch. BUT! To my credit, a wearable is probably one of the easiest ways to get data from the elderly without having to manually do it everyday.
The Fit Bit Surge Fitness Superwatch is great for the elderly for many reasons. It monitors your hear rate yes, but it does so much more. I like that it also monitors sleep. This is a huge issue for the elderly so it’s important to be able to help if needed.
It also has a GPS tracking device in it so you can review routes. If you start to notice confusion or wandering, this is a great way to double check they are safe!
Masimo ISpO2 Pulse Oximeter
The ISpO2 is a great way to monitor basic vital signs in the comfort of your own home. I would highly recommend this for someone that isn’t comfortable monitoring this on their own.
This is even a product I would recommend home health care agencies acquire. It’s quick, easy, mobile, and makes the data super easy to track.
HAPILABS 100 HAPIfork Bluetooth-Enabled Smart Fork
This is just an incredible product. There’s so much that can be said for the correlation between nutrition and health. The Hapilabs Hapifork ensures you know when and how much your loved one is eating. How cool is that?
Monitoring food intake is crucial for a lot of patients and especially the elderly. When you have someone that is already weak not eating, you run into a bigger issue and fast. The HAPIfork’s data can be uploaded in real time so you can see just what’s going on.
More on the Silver Mother:
The Silver Mother can be for anyone but was designed for the elderly and disabled. A lot of families and friends are spread out across the country or even globe these days. It can be difficult to help with care of a parent or loved one being so far away.
However, with this great device, you can get automatic updates if anything is amiss immediately. Technology has come a long way in a short amount of time and now there is an affordable way to keep tabs on your elderly or disabled friend or family member.
If you have parents that are getting older and want to make sure they are taken care of, this is a great product for you and them. It’s a win-win.
How does it work?
Let’s get down to the nitty gritty. You know how The Silver Mother works in theory, but there is definitely more to it.
First off, this is incredibly user-friendly. So, if you are available to set it up for your loved one, it shouldn’t take you much time at all. Not only that but it is esthetically pleasing so there should be no objections there!
The Mother Hub can be plugged in anywhere in the house. I would suggest if you are placing this device in a home with a person suffering from Alzheimer’s or dementia that you plug in the hub somewhere unseen. This will help prevent any meddling or unplugging of the device. However, it does need to be connected to a router, so keep that in mind as well!
Next, you can just select a monitoring program that best suits their needs. The great thing about this product is that all the monitoring programs are free. There’s no one time set up fee, monthly subscription, or pay as you go. It’s all there, forever. Not only that, but it’s adaptable. You can change the programs as you need to suit your loved one best.
Finally, simply attach one of the sensors to work with the program you selected. Take a deep breath and relax. That’s it! That’s all you have to do to set everything up. It’s incredibly easy and simple to change as needed.
Now, you will receive e-mail or text alerts if something isn’t right. You can review your loved one’s day on your smartphone at any time. It really does make a huge difference in both you and your family or friend’s life.
By using the Silver Mother, you can rest assured that everything is going fine and if it isn’t you will be notified. The real reward here is that the person you care for remains happy and independent in their own home.
Ok, so now we know how the Silver Mother works. What benefits are there beyond what was mentioned above?
One of the many huge benefits this handy device offers, is that it eliminates the need for multiple products to obtain all of these benefits. By doing that, you are saving money and increasing efficiency in care. It also works well with The Nest if you have already purchased it.
Side note: If you haven’t purchased the Nest for your family member or friend, you should! It saves money on heating and cooling. You can also log online to check the temperature in the house and turn it up or down. It’s a great device to work in tandem with the Silver Mother! It really is affordable! With no monthly fees or program costs, you are saving a lot of money. Think of all the different items you would need to accomplish what the Silver Mother does. You are looking at a few thousand dollars when it is all said in done while the Silver Mother is under $500.00.
It was mentioned above that you can view statistics and receive alerts according to your sensors and programs. The Silver Mother is IOS, Android, and Windows compatible making it easy for multiple family member or friends to use.
Independence for your loved one is something you cannot put a price on. For a low cost, you can keep them in their home and alone, if they wish, longer. This is something they will be grateful for and it allows you to relax at the same time.
Now that you know how this amazing device works and what benefits there are, how will it fit into your life?
What programs are available?
This crafty device allows you to help your elderly or disabled loved one in so many different avenues of their everyday life. Let’s explore some different scenarios that may work well in your current situation.
Placing a sensor on the front door is a great way to make sure that an elderly person isn’t wandering. You can program the hub to alert you if they are leaving at an odd time. This will allow you to act quickly so they do not get lost. The same thing goes for windows. If a window is opened in the middle of winter, you know something is amiss and can get help over their as soon as possible.
Skipping pill dosages or taking too many is a common cause of hospital visits for the elderly. Place a sensor on their pill box to ensure that they aren’t: missing a dose, taking too many pills, and taking them at the correct time. If your mom forgets to take her morning pills, she can receive a phone call to remind her!
Not only does temperature control effect bills but it can also signify a greater issue with the elderly and disabled. For instance, if it is 90 degrees in their home in the middle of summer, either the AC could be out or they might be confused. Overheating can lead to dehydration and confusion in the elderly and is a very common reason for ER visits.
Attach a sensor in the home to monitor temperature or sync with The Nest to help keep your family member or friend comfortable in their home.
This is a really great program. Place a sensor on the refrigerator door to record activity. So many times in the home health field, I arrived at a client’s house to find that they had not eaten in some time. Beyond that, their food in the fridge had gone bad. Using the Silver Mother on the fridge tracks to make sure that the one you care about is getting food throughout the day. You will receive an alert if they aren’t and can address the situation quickly.
Activity for the elderly and disabled can be tricky to monitor due to any ailments they may face. However, we all know that getting up and about for a while helps improve your mood and has wonderful physical effects as well. If the TV remote has been used frequently you can get message from the Silver Mother and call the one you are monitoring. Make sure they are not ill or feeling blue!
Sleep is so important for everyone. Too much or too little sleep can be a sign of health decline. You can place a sensor in the bed and monitor how long a person is in there. This acts great as a warning if they are still in bed too late in the morning there may be a serious issue. Where if you didn’t have this device, who knows how long they could lay there without assistance?
More programs will be developed as the need arises and sensors can be used in other creative ways to help the one you care about. For example: Have a family pet that you want to make sure is well cared for? Put a sensor on a food bin to make sure they are being fed!
Why the Silver Mother?
- Smartphone alerts, IOS, Android, and Windows compatible
- Easy set-up
- No monthly fee (One-time purchase of product and that’s it!)
- Peace of mind for you
- Eliminates buying multiple products
- Easy on the eye
- Keeps elderly and disabled independent
What the manufacturer won’t tell you
It seems the only downfall the company skimmed over was that this needs to be connected to an internet router. Which means, the person using this device would need to have internet. Working in the home health care field, I can tell you that not a lot of patients had internet. So this could be a potential problem!
In saying that, the patients that did have internet seemed to do better in general. A lot of them were able to use an iPad and connect with their family via FaceTime or e-mail. They were more connected with their families. Staying in close contact with the elderly and disabled allows you to jumpstart solutions to problems earlier and keep them happier and healthier much longer.
The Silver Mother Is Elite
In a world where being busy is the norm, it’s hard to keep tabs on the elderly or disabled person you love. Phone calls aren’t always forthcoming and many elderly patents avoid telling their family that they need help due to fear of losing independence. The Silver Mother addresses all of these issues and the outcome is a friendly device that will ease your mind.
Between making sure mom is eating and alerting you if dad forgets to take his pills, the Silver Mother has you both covered. The fact of the matter is, you want what’s best for the one you love and keeping their independence is wrapped up in that. Safety is something every person worries about when caring for the elderly and disabled. This device helps monitor things so you don’t have to.
The Silver Mother is a great device that is going to change the way we live. Keep mom or dad in their home longer. Sleep well tonight knowing you will receive an alert if something is amiss.
Why do you need a health monitoring device?
There are numerous reasons an individual might need a health monitoring device. This device enables you to noninvasively gather information including: blood oxygenation (SpO2), pulse rate (PR), and perfusion index (PI). This is an extremely beneficial advantage when staying at home and trying to maintain autonomy. These three data points are valuable in maintaining a close eye on your health. See below for definitions of each.
Oxygen Saturation (SpO2) is a measure of the oxygen saturation level in the arterial blood. Higher oxygen saturation indicates more oxygen in the arterial blood. Oxygen saturation can change due to a number of factors, including lung or heart function and altitude.
Pulse Rate (PR) indicates the number of pulses per minute. This parameter is useful for assessing overall fitness as well as exertion levels at a particular moment in time.
Perfusion Index (PI) is the ratio of the pulsatile blood flow to the non-pulsatile blood in peripheral tissue and is used to measure peripheral blood flow. A higher PI indicates higher blood flow.

Why the Masimo brand?
This product features the same Masimo SET technology found in hospitals worldwide. It is a brand name you can trust and a quality you cannot beat! If that isn’t proof enough that this is the right product for you, check out all the amazing technology you are getting. You can take a look at the ISPO2 for Apple on Amazon by clicking here. Alternatively, you can check out the ISPO2 for Andriod on Amazon by clicking here.
Easy, Fast, and Convenient Technology
This health monitoring device uses hospital-grade Masimo SET pulse oximetry which measures oxygen saturation and pulse rate during movement and even when there is low blood flow to the finger, which can be an issue with a lot of elderly. Particularly those who suffer from diabetes or poor circulation.
You can view and e-mail up to 12 hours of data collected. With the free Masimo ISPO2 application, you can view your SpO2 and PR measurement history over time and share that data through email. This is such a great feature because it allows the user or their helper to keep in constant contact with their healthcare provider. Not only is that incredibly useful for record keeping but it can help catch minor issues before they become major.
The ISPO2 is lightweight and extremely portable. It even comes with a fancy carrying case to keep this as convenient as possible. It can be brought with you while traveling or even just to run errands!
It operates with Apple iOS (30 pin connector) devices or Android devices. While some may say the technology portion may seem like not a great fit for the elderly, I beg to differ! After working in the healthcare field, and specifically while working in home health, I have noticed a huge trend in the elderly having some sort of tablet or smart phone.
They may not be operating these devices at full capacity but with the easy touch screen capabilities, it is easier than ever for them to learn! If for some reason they are not able to figure out the device or it’s app, they can always use the help of their caregiver or a family member.
What the manufacturer may not tell you
There are a few situations where the ISPO2 health monitoring device has not come up to par. Like any device, it needs to be used properly and for the right person in order to reach its full potential.
While it does measure your stats while moving, it does not do well in extreme movements. For instance, there was a complaint that the data wasn’t accurate after performing on a stair climber at the highest level.
Like most technology, the battery life is always in question. The device collects data every few seconds. In saying that, it can run a battery down pretty quickly. The manufacturer says not to have your device plugged in and charging while using the ISPO2 due to fear of electric shock. In most cases, you are going to be safe utilizing the ISPO2 while your phone or tablet is charging.
This device is expensive. There is no getting around that. However, I would insist you look beyond the price at the product you are getting. Even better, think of the peace of mind you or your loved ones will have knowing that your health is being monitored.
Who is it for?
Want to stay at home but your kids are worried about you being alone? Or, are you a son or daughter looking to feel some more comfort with your parent staying home unattended. This device is definitely for both of these situations.
I have seen the battles that ensue between families and friends for those who want to stay in their home as long as possible. If you can provide data to your healthcare provider on how you are doing, chances are, you are going to get their support for staying home longer! This is a win-win! Both you, your family, and practitioner can be on the same page.
This health monitoring device also may be for someone who is curious about their health. A person that is taking the initiative to stay ahead of the game and stop illness in its tracks. However, more likely than not, I would suggest this product to the elderly or disabled.
Who isn’t it for?
Given that the product measures oxygen levels, you would think it would be a great product for someone with sleep apnea. This is NOT for someone with sleep apnea. The reason being that apnea can occur for several seconds to minutes before the saturation on the pulse oximeter drops.
The adrenaline junky. While they should certainly have a health monitoring device, this is not the one for them. If you are planning on running a marathon, speed racing a bicycle, or utilizing a stair climber at warp speed, do not use this product. Again, it is great with natural movements, but once you start getting at the athlete level, the results can be skewed.
I am a huge supporter of staying independent in your own home as long as possible. I have been in the trenches with those who fight tooth and nail to do so. I cannot imagine the feeling but I can certainly empathize after my career in this field. These health monitoring device, to me, speak very loudly in the efforts to do so.
I cannot express strongly enough how great having a health monitoring device is. I have researched other products and these continually stand out to me. Be a step ahead of the game and get one for you or your loved one today.
